by Gary M. Alba, with introduction by Professor Ricardo T. Jose, Ph.D.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Gary is the youngest of three siblings born to Rodolfo Alba, Sr. and Benigna Mendoza. After graduating from the University of the Philippines in 1984 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine, he did postgraduate training research at the Okinawa Prefectural Livestock Research Station and then at the Kagoshima University in Kyushu, where he was exposed to Japanese life and culture.
Prior to his research study at the Kagoshima University, Gary undertook a six-month Basic Nihonggo course at Kyushu University in Fukuoka Prefecture. It was midway through the language course when he received a letter from his father requesting him to visit Hotel Suikoen in the nearby City of Kurume.
This brief encounter with a piece of his father’s cherished past left an indelible mark in the author’s life. This seed of love and interest eventually bloomed to inspire him to formally document his father’s memory.
