Kalun

by Edwin F. Pamaran

KALUN is a gripping true-to-life story of Pedro Javier Cuevas, a man of humble origin who grew up in the conflict-ridden Cavite Province during the Spanish occupation of the Philippine Islands.
When as a young fellow he was captured by colonial authorities in a purge after a failed general uprising in Cavite, Pedro was banished to the notorious penal farm of San Ramon in Zamboanga.
Chained and beaten while doing heavy work, he organized a daring escape with several other prisoners, crossed the Basilan Strait on a stolen vinta, and landed in the nearby island of Basilan; only to realize that three hostile forces were waiting for them — Spanish authorities, Sulu forces, and Yakan warriors.
Alone and far away from home in the jungle covered island, KALUN narrates the leadership, courage, sacrifice, and iron-willed spirit of Pedro who, together with his five tough but worn-down companions, opted to fight in their absolute desire to live and survive.
Of all adventure stories in the Philippines during the 1800’s, Pedro’s remarkable life journey is one of the most exciting, dynamic, and colorful in the recorded history of the Philippines. Based on his interview in 1903 and sources from the National Archive of the Philippines, Spanish Jesuits letters, unpublished articles, and various books, KALUN will allow the readers to experience the journey in the life and struggles of Pedro Javier Cuevas, better known as Datu Kalun of Basilan.
